Forgive

Posted on Jul 30th, 2007 by The Daily Buddha : Creative The Daily Buddha
We have all been hurt by someone in our life, that is simply how it is. Often times that hurt is partly because we had expectations about a certain event or person, maybe things did not play themselves out according to our view, maybe someone was genuinely malicious and out to hurt others. Regardless of the circumstances, forgiveness and understanding are the keys to being released from the pain. Forgiveness can indeed be difficult. Yet in the long run, it is far easier to forgive than to live with resentment or continuing retribution. Through forgiveness, we can move away from the pains of the past. With forgiveness, we can achieve real freedom. There are always opportunities to benefit from the value of forgiveness. We can forgive ourself, we can forgive others, and we can forgive even when we don't know exactly who to forgive. Because forgiveness is not about who is to blame or who is at fault. Forgiveness is mostly about letting go, completely and permanently, within ourself. Forgiveness is recognizing the reality that what has happened has happened, and that there's no point in allowing it to dominate your life. Forgiveness refreshingly clears the slate and enables us to move positively forward. Carrying around a load of resentment can be an enormous and unnecessary burden. Forgive early and often, and we'll considerably lighten our loads. Have a quite day and carry this thought - To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you. Dear Jim
How true, I carried a load like that for a long time, but as soon as I really forgave, not just in words, but truly and deeply it felt like a mountain fell of my chest. It does not mean you forget what has happend, but it is just the past, and has no more grip on today, in this moment.

Yes I think we have all carried something around in life that began to weigh us down. We have all been hurt by others. By that same token I always try to remind myself that I have quite possibly hurt others and maybe not realized it.

It is there that I see we may not always be fully conscious of our actions and words and therefore forgiveness becomes a much simpler process. I know there are people out there who are perfectly aware of their actions and proceed without care or concern of others. Again we must realize that their vision is obscured by something they most likey cannot perceive or understand, and it is in that realization that we can have compassion and forgiveness. For we ourselves have lost sight at one point or another.

Hi there !
it is always good to stop and realize the power of forgiveness in our lives.. Great post  ! Recently  i watched the new Harry Potter movie - got to keep the child in me happy :) -. Your post made me remember a part of the movie where one of the characters explains to the young magician that he is not what happened to him, only that things have happened to him , good or bad. I really liked that moment because how true is that ? : we tend to built our persona with the events that made our way. But in fact, they do not make us who we are. Conscious of that, i can let go of what happened - again, good or bad - and forgive when needed.

Great comment Swan! Thank you so much for sharing. Your insights ring very true with me. We are not what has happened to us and as you stated this insight is tremendous in freeing us from our own limitations!
Much peace, Jim
