Growth

Posted on Jun 11th, 2008 by The Daily Buddha : Creative The Daily Buddha

Good Day,

For many years I was a profesional landscaper. I did both the installation and maintenence of plant materials on large commercial properties. I enjoyed the work and learned many fascinating things about plant life and just how remarkable it is.

It has many years since I left the field, but the experience has stayed with me and time has allowed me to see many parreles between plants and ourselves. Many years ago when the biosphere projects were coming to an end, they televised tours from the insides of the defunct spaces. At one point during a slow pan of the large main space a friend watching with us noted how all the trees and larger plant life were strung up with wire as if almost suspended from the ceiling.

Curious he asked what was up with the "suspended plants"? It seems that because of the lack of wind blowing and pushing the trees around within Biosphere 2 they did not develop deep strong root systems thus needing the extra support to hold them upright and allow them to live without simply falling over!

The same can be said for us. Difficulties in our life can be seen as the wind that blows through, pushing us around just enough so that we develop stronger root systems. Systems that will support, protect, and feed us for a lifetime.

Another example is the popular Crepe Myrtle which if left un pruned becomes a tangled mess of branches and knotty formations within the trunk and branches. When skillfully pruned with the understanding that every cut will produce two more stems or trunks a master gardener can turn the Crepe Myrtle into a blooming masterpiece with classic form and beauty. Again every where the plant is cut or scarred, energy is produced and directed toward the area resulting in new growth and new blooms!

Our lives are really no different. Over time without mindfull care and attention our own lives can become tangled messes that seem to have no real direction or purpose and yet with a little knowledge and understanding we too can prune away the untamed growth and begin to really direct our progress resulting in the same beautiful results as the Crepe Myrtle!

Have a wonderful day and consider this - Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely.

Peace and Love, Jim
